Deborah Stuttard Communications

Freelance legal copywriter

Clear, credible legal copywriting for law firms, legal businesses and the agencies that support them.

Hello, I'm Deborah, but you can call me Bee.

I'm a freelance legal copywriter. And I do clever things with words.

With almost three decades of marketing experience, including working within law firms and writing for them, I understand the pressures legal marketers face. Tight deadlines. Complex practice areas. Fee earners with little time to spare.

My job is to turn specialist legal knowledge into clear, engaging content that’s accurate, accessible and genuinely useful to your audience.

Whether you’re looking to improve your website, strengthen your thought leadership, or increase your visibility in search, I’ll create legal copy that’s well-researched, carefully written, and designed to support your firm’s marketing goals.

Almost three decades of legal marketing experience

Benefits of using a freelance legal copywriter

For many law firms and legal businesses, employing a full-time copywriter isn’t practical. But that doesn’t mean you should compromise on the quality of your marketing.

Working with a freelance legal copywriter gives you direct access to specialist legal marketing expertise, without the overheads of an in-house employee or the cost of a large agency.

I can help you:

Great legal copy, without the big-agency price tag.

I believe in transparent pricing, so you’ll always know exactly what you’re paying before we start.

My standard rate is £50 per hour. Despite almost three decades in marketing and nearly 15 years as a freelance copywriter, that’s still below the UK average. I also offer discounted rates for agencies, retainers and copywriting support packs.

There are no hidden costs or unexpected invoices. The price we agree is the price you’ll pay.

Support Packs

Need flexible support without committing to a monthly retainer? Support packs give you a bank of hours to use whenever you need them over a six-month period. Pack start at 10 hours (£450).

Retainers

If you need regular copywriting support, a retainer gives you dedicated time in my schedule each month at a reduced hourly rate. Retainers start from eight hours per month (£360) and are ideal for businesses that need ongoing content, regular website updates or a reliable copywriting partner. Hours are invoiced in advance and are allocated to that month, so any unused time doesn’t roll over.

What's so great about using me as your freelance legal copywriter?

Affordable

Great copy doesn’t have to come with a big-agency price tag. My rates are below the UK average for freelance copywriters, giving you experienced, high-quality support that’s excellent value for money.

Experienced

I’ve been a freelance copywriter for almost 15 years, and I was writing content for over a decade before that. So you can trust me to deliver a high standard of work.

Down-to-Earth

No hand-holding. No endless revisions. I quickly get to grips with your business, work seamlessly with your team and suppliers, and deliver copy you can be proud of.

From employment law to wills and probate, and quite a few things in between

One of the best things about being a freelance copywriter is that no two projects are ever the same. Over the years, I have written about a huge range of legal subjects, learning fast and asking the right questions to create content that feels authentic.

Here are some of the topics I have covered:

Want to see relevant examples? Just ask. I’ll happily share work from your practice area or industry where I can.

My legal copywriting clients

I’ve created content for a wide range of law firms and legal businesses, both as a freelance copywriter and while working within a marketing agency.

I’ve also partnered with marketing and SEO agencies that needed an experienced legal copywriter to support their clients.

What my clients say

Common questions

Why do you need a freelance legal copywriter?

While solicitors are great at securing results for clients, many find it difficult to drop the “legalese” when it comes to writing.

It’s understandable. The legal world is bursting with acronyms and technical language that helps legal professionals to communicate with each other. But most people just don’t understand it. That’s where a legal copywriter can help.

Creating easy to read content that appeals to new and existing clients, I use all my skills to enhance your firm’s brand. Furthermore, as a former in-house legal marketing manager, I have a wealth of legal experience. So, my copy is not only engaging, but it’s also professionally written and factually correct.

Less than you might think. Despite my experience, my standard hourly rate is just £50ph. That’s less than the national average.

I also offer discounted rates to agencies, and clients who sign up for a retainer or support pack.

All costs are quoted upfront and agreed before we start. And there will be no nasty surprises. The price I quote is the price you’ll pay.

You need someone who can write and who understands the immense challenges faced by the legal profession and their legal marketing teams.

In my experience, most law firms don’t operate like ordinary businesses, so you need a copywriter who knows how solicitors and partners tick. Someone who isn’t a stranger to the dynamics of the modern law firm.

You also need someone that can turn legalese into easy to read content that appeals to new and existing clients. And be confident that it is carefully researched, well-written, and factually correct.

It’s this unique understanding that makes professional legal copywriters so effective, adding value to your law firm by increasing your visibility and – ultimately – your revenue.

Over the years I have worked as a legal copywriter for a number of law firms and legal providers. Both as a freelancer and as part of a wider marketing agency.

No! While some legal copywriters are keen to promote their legal qualifications, I’d counter than my 20+ years in marketing and many satisfied legal clients, demonstrate the value that I can add to your law firm or legal business. Plus, in my experience, any copywriter qualified with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) tends to charge more than I do, without any guarantee of a higher standard of work.

If anything, because I am not a lawyer, I know when legal language is unlikely to be understood by your clients, and I use my experience to turn complex, technical legal subjects into accessible copy.

And, having worked as a marketing manager within a law firm, I understand the immense challenges faced by the legal profession.
